My historical specialisms include the landed and political elite from the seventeenth century onwards and the history of the printed word, among many other areas. I have worked for several major humanities research projects, both on staff and as a consultant. These include the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, where I was a research editor from 1999 to 2006, the History of Parliament, the Oxford English Dictionary and The History of Oxford University Press.
Recent publications include contributions to The History of Parliament: The House of Lords 1660-1715, and several entries for the ongoing online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
These subjects include the Malcolm family of Poltalloch, Argyll; the Methodist parliamentarian Thomas Thompson of Hull; the rake Sir Francis Blake Delaval, of Seaton Delaval Hall, Northumberland (pictured); George Greville, second earl of Warwick; and Fulke Greville, seventh earl of Warwick and David Greville, eighth earl of Warwick. My three chapters for The History of Oxford University Press: volume one, to 1780, edited by Ian Gadd, appeared in November 2013.
